Travolta Fumes Over Fancy Footwork

With John Travolta’s famous “Saturday Night Fever” white suit up for auction at Sotheby’s, the actor is discussing another music-related suit--a legal one.

Travolta’s attorneys have served the Los Angeles band Extra Fancy and several L.A. area record stores a cease-and-desist order concerning the band’s single “You Look Like a Movie Star, Honey.” The single, released by the band independently, features a cover with an artist’s rendering of Travolta in his trademark “Saturday Night Fever” disco pose. But he’s not wearing the suit . . . or anything else.

In addition to serving the order, Travolta’s representatives removed a poster for the single from the wall of the Virgin Megastore in West Hollywood, according to the store manager, saying it was for use as evidence.

The drawing was taken from a 1978 issue of the now-defunct porn magazine Skin, which regularly featured nude renderings of stars in famous poses. Extra Fancy’s use of the image got coverage in several publications (including Pop Eye) and on MTV’s “120 Minutes,” which has played the video for the song--which does not feature any images or references to Travolta.

Travolta’s attorney, John H. Lavely Jr., did not return repeated calls. Record store managers, though, confirmed that they were told that legal action would be taken if they ignored the order to stop selling the record.

Representatives of the band--which has earned attention in the L.A. scene both for its aggressive performances and its openly gay stance--would not comment. At the time of the single’s release, though, manager Paul V. said that the group hoped Travolta would view it with a sense of humor.

The matter actually may be moot. Managers at record stores that were served with the order--including Virgin, Aron’s and Rhino--report that the limited run of the single sold out weeks ago. There are no plans to make any more copies, though an Extra Fancy album featuring a new version of the song will be released in August.
