FOR THE BIRDS

Page 6 of the June 11 Calendar depicts an “artist” with a mobile-full of photos of body parts hanging on strings. She has in the past presented stuffed dead sparrows wearing knitted wool wraps. “Why? I can’t say,” explains the French “artist.” “It’s a necessity.” The L.A. County Museum of Art sees fit to show 60 of her works.

Page 55 presents another “artist” posed in front of a roomful of beds upon which maps are painted. The Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, chose this collection to present to the public. Why these “artists” are making a living is less a mystery than why The Times gives them space to promote such detritus. I know there is good art in this city, even inspiring, but critics continue to laud the naked emperor’s clothes whilst great artists will probably have to wait until they’re dead for any attention.
