An 8-year-old Garden Grove boy was still in the pediatric intensive unit at UCI Medical Center Saturday after he was thrown from a car in a three-vehicle crash that also injured four others, including his parents.

The accident occurred about 7:40 p.m. Friday on Brookhurst Street south of Hazard Avenue, said Westminster Police Officer Al Bracket.

Viet Hung Nguyen, 39, of Garden Grove was turning left from southbound Brookhurst Street into the driveway of a Stater Bros. market when his Acura was broadsided by a Honda Accord driven northbound by Ninh Ta, 23, of Garden Grove, Bracket said.

The Acura was thrown into a Mitsubishi pickup truck driven by Thuan Tran, 28, of Anaheim. The truck was stopped in the driveway waiting to turn onto Brookhurst, he said.

Johnny Nguyen, 8, who was sitting in the back seat of the Acura, was hurled out of the car’s rear window and struck the left front fender of a Ford Mustang parked in the market’s shopping lot.

The boy suffered severe head injuries and was transported to UCI Medical Center, where he was being treated Saturday in the pediatric intensive care unit.

His father, Viet Nguyen, and mother, Loan, 42, suffered concussions and also were transported to the medical center for care.

Viet Nguyen was scheduled to be released from the hospital Saturday night while Loan was expected to remain for observation, said nursing supervisor Nancy Rhomberg.

The driver of the Honda, Ta, and his passenger, 21-year-old Phu Ta, both of Garden Grove, were taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana. They were released Saturday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.
