World IN BRIEF : PAKISTAN : Gunmen Kill 14 in Karachi Rampage
- Share via
Gunmen on a rampage to avenge the alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl shut down Pakistan’s biggest city, killing at least 14 people, setting fire to government buildings and attacking newspaper offices. At least 39 people have been killed in gunfights and sniper attacks since the girl told a news conference Thursday that she had been violently attacked. Police said the marauders, armed with automatic rifles and grenade launchers, set fire to a bank, a telephone office and at least 15 vehicles. Much of the killing is being blamed on the largest faction of the Mohajir National Movement, a militant organization representing Indian Muslims who settled in Pakistan after 1947. That faction has blamed the rape of its young supporter on the rival Haqiqi group.
