CULVER CITY : Historic Plunge Opens for Summer
The Culver City Municipal Plunge, the city’s historic 46-year-old pool, opened Saturday with its traditional free swim to mark the last day of school.
The pool was the Westside’s only public swimming facility when it opened in 1949. In its heyday, it sometimes drew more than 100,000 patrons per year.

Pool history--A June 25 story in the Westside section incorrectly reported that the Culver City Municipal Plunge was the Westside’s first outdoor public swimming pool when it opened in 1949. The city of Beverly Hills opened a municipal swimming pool, also known as the Plunge, in 1929 where La Cienega Park Community Center, 8400 Gregory Way, is located. That pool closed in 1976. Another pool, which is still in use, opened at 1835 Stoner Ave. in 1931.
Hours for recreational swimming are 1 to 5 p.m. seven days a week and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday. Beginning today, patrons will pay the regular daily fees of 50 cents for children 11 and under, 75 cents for youths 12 to 17, $1 for adults 18 and over and 50 cents for seniors. Children under 6 must be accompanied by an adult.
Classes ranging from beginning swimming to water ballet will begin Monday. The pool is at Veterans Park, 4117 Overland Ave. For information, call 204-4738 or 202-5700.
