LAGUNA BEACH : City to Sell Cleared Lots at Stabilized Slide Site

Share

Having previously purchased three lots where a dramatic landslide destroyed three homes in 1993, the city is now preparing to sell the parcels.

The hillside lots on Mystic Lane range in estimated value from $175,000 to $195,000.

After the landslide, during which one home slid from its foundations and burst into flames, the lots were cleared. The city has stabilized the hillside and road, and reinstalled utilities at the site. The lots are ready for construction.

“It’s one of the safest slopes in town right now,” City Manager Kenneth C. Frank told the City Council this week.

The city has had considerable problems with landslides over the years. Most recently, a pair of landslides forced three families from their homes in the Rimrock Canyon community. Earlier this month, the city has hired geotechnical and civil engineers to study that area to determine how that landslide can best be repaired.

The City Council considered several ways of selling the Mystic Lane property, finally deciding on a sealed bidding process that accepts minimums of $15,000 below the estimated value for each lot.
