Business Studies Going International

A curriculum for international business studies will be created at Rancho Santiago College using a $178,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Helping the college develop the new program will be the Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce in Orange County, the Hispanic Bar Assn., Chapman University’s School of Business and Economics, Pacific World Corp., Union Transport and Medical Market International.

Rancho Santiago plans to offer an associate degree and a vocational certificate in international business.

Yachtsmen Donate Two Vessels

Two East Coast yachtsmen have donated boats to Orange Coast College’s sailing program.

Keith E. Pugh Jr. of Washington donated “Serena,” a 58-foot cruising ketch that will be used for educational cruises focusing on seamanship.

Jack King of Annapolis, Md., gave the college a 62-foot ocean racing sloop called “Merrythought” that will be used by OCC’s sailing team.

Science Grants Go to 7 Professors

Professors of natural science and mathematics at Cal State Fullerton have been awarded more than $400,000 in grants from the National Science Foundation. The grant recipients and their research projects are:

* Keith H. Wasner, an associate professor of physics, who will study fiber optics.

* Kathryn A. Dickson, assistant professor of biological science, who will test her hypothesis that a tuna’s ability to maintain elevated muscle temperatures results in increased swimming speed.

* Math professors William B. Gearhard and John G. Pierce, who will establish a modeling and simulation laboratory for teaching applied mathematics.

* Gerald E. Brem, professor and chairman of geological sciences, and Diane Clemens-Knott, assistant geology professor, who will purchase equipment for use in undergraduate geochemistry instruction and research.

* Joyce K. Ono, a biology professor, who will study the molecular basis of potassium channels that may control the excitability of nerve cells in the brain.

Boat Engines Donated by Yamaha

The Cypress College Marine Service Program recently received a donation of 11 boat engines with a total value of $100,000.

The gift from Cypress-based Yamaha Motor Corp. USA was the largest equipment donation received by the college marine program, a campus spokesperson said.
