South Bay : FRENCH FRY PROVINCIAL
In a giant step for recycling, three would-be architects at El Camino College near Torrance have found an aesthetic new use for old McDonald’s wrappers and stale french fries.
Using fast food and other trash, the students constructed a shelter big enough to sleep 10, garnering top honors at the recent Chautauqua Architecture Competition.
Students Paul Spann, Nan Taketa and Scott Torre used aluminum scrap metal to concoct 26 frames. They filled in the plastic wrap walls with wastepaper, computer keyboards, drafting equipment, cardboard toilet paper rolls, toilet seat covers, and--the piece de resistance --leftovers from a late-night McDonald’s meal, chicken McNuggets and all.
Why the juxtaposition of keyboards and McNuggets? “It’s life in the architecture lab,” said El Camino architecture instructor Daniel Torres. The students won $100, which should finance a few more orders of fries.
