Laws: Fireworks and Ammunition Sales

For many years the U.S. veterans organizations sold fireworks in Culver City to raise money for 4th of July celebrations, even after the surrounding communities acknowledged the hazards to life, limb and property.

The Culver City Fire Department, along with concerned citizens, led an anti-fireworks campaign against vendor sales to the public. Since then, civic groups have sponsored an annual fireworks display open to the entire Los Angeles Westside. This event is still being held annually on Culver High’s football field.

Again Culver City is in a similar controversial situation. The City Council voted to continue to accept the sale of ammunition without registration (Westside, June 15), and thus rejecting a means adopted by adjacent cities designed to reduce gun violence.

Why not have this simple record of identification that might deter the use of guns that kill people?

Last week, a 16-year-old riding a Culver City bus shot and killed a fellow passenger. In the near future, others may come to Culver City to purchase their ammunition to implement violent notions because registration will be required elsewhere.

It is important that the Culver City Council reconsider its negative decision and require registration of all ammunition purchases. Teamwork with our neighboring cities will benefit all of us. HENRY and ADELE SIEGEL Culver City
