BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Allanson Ready to Come Back

Catcher Andy Allanson will probably come off the disabled list today, according to Manager Marcel Lachemann.

Now, the question is who gets sent to triple-A Vancouver to make room for Allanson, who has been sidelined since suffering a gash on his left hand June 12.

Lachemann said the Angels will meet today to discuss their next move. Their roster already is stocked with four catchers.

“We’ll try to get everybody together to see what the various opinions are,” Lachemann said.

The most likely candidates for demotion figure to be Mark Dalesandro and Chris Turner. But each is a versatile player, capable of playing the infield as well as catching.

Jorge Fabregas has apparently earned his spot by hitting in 15 of 19 games, including a nine-game hitting streak that was the longest by an Angel catcher since Lance Parrish also hit in nine in a row in 1990.

Greg Myers has been filling in at designated hitter while Chili Davis is on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

Of Allanson, Lachemann said, “From what they [the trainers] are telling me, it sounds like he’s ready to go. We just have to decide what to do.”

Davis has enjoyed use of The Ballpark at Arlington’s swimming pool while rehabilitating his injured hamstring. He said he hopes the powers-that-be include one when, and if, a new stadium is built in Anaheim.

He ran laps in the five-foot deep pool.

Spike Owen started in place of Damion Easley at second base because Lachemann said he wanted a more veteran presence on the field.

“You like to keep a certain level of experience on the field, especially when things get tough,” Lachemann said. “Veterans get you through the tough times smoother than the kids sometimes.”

Easley’s eighth-inning error led to two runs in Texas’ 9-8 victory Wednesday.
