The Ventura County Fire Department will receive a $50,000 state grant to develop a regional hazardous materials training facility.

The grant was awarded to the department by the California Environmental Protection Agency, said Michael LaPlant, county fire training chief.

The money will be used to purchase chemical testing equipment as well as protective clothing and special breathing apparatus for firefighters, LaPlant said.

Some of the funds will be used to buy classroom aids and training materials, he said. The training facility will be located at the County Fire Department’s existing facility at Camarillo Airport.

Once established, the training facility will be available to municipal fire departments in the region, LaPlant said.
