From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Pope John Paul II plans to canonize three Catholic priests today who were martyred in Europe’s 17th-Century religious wars. In a gesture to Protestants angered by the plan, the Pope’s entourage announced that he will also visit a memorial to 24 Protestants killed in the strife. On Saturday, the Pope made an appeal for greater civic involvement in an address to the new nation’s bishops. The Pope urged Roman Catholics who were repressed under communism to shape their new democracies according to church teachings.
