Calabasas : $1,000 Reward Offered in 2 Crimes at Schools

The Las Virgenes Unified School District is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of suspects in two apparently unrelated crimes.

In the first, stereos were stolen from two or three cars at Calabasas High School on the night of June 23 or morning of June 24, while students were away on an overnight graduation cruise, said Donald Zimring, the district’s assistant superintendent of business.

There apparently were no witnesses, he said.

In the second incident, he said, several people saw two teen-age boys set fire to two portable toilets on the campus of Agoura High School on June 25. A security guard gave chase, Zimring said, but failed to catch the two.

The youths, about 15- and 16-years-old, escaped into an apartment complex near the school, Zimring said. It is believed the teen-agers had earlier set fire to a trash can.

Anyone with information is asked to call the school at (818) 880-4000, Ext. 203, the “We-Tip” Hotline at (800) SPEEKUP, or the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at (818) 878-1808.

“We are appealing to the community at large to come forward and help us ensure that those who are responsible for these acts are held accountable,” Zimring said.

Detective Ed Young of the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station said Wednesday there were no leads in the car burglary case. But he said, it’s a crime that’s becoming more common in the Calabasas area, and schools have been targeted in the past.
