SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Reading, Music Aides to Lose Their Jobs

Share

More than two dozen elementary school reading aides and five music assistants will lose their jobs under a $136-million budget approved last week by trustees of the Capistrano Unified School District.

In approving the 1995-96 spending plan, the board actually laid off 52 reading aides, but they are eligible to reapply for 26 reading-aide positions at various elementary schools.

Previously, each of the elementary schools had two reading aides, one who worked under a special program, Writing to Read, and another who used other methods.

The Writing to Read program had yielded good results at some schools but not all, district officials said. By requiring the aides to reapply for their jobs, trustees said, they are giving individual school principals the flexibility to choose which program works best for their students.

Cutting reading-aide positions is one way that the board is trying to deal with a $3-million shortfall caused by losses in Orange County’s collapsed investment pool.
