A Superior Court judge has temporarily stopped Bell Garden’s move to lay off 13 employees to help close a $4-million budget gap.
The workers will continue to be paid until a July 14 hearing to determine whether the city acted legally when it terminated the employees. Union leaders said the layoffs were unfair because the city did not sit down with employees to discuss alternatives to job losses.
But city officials said the contract gives it the right to lay off workers without conferring with them or the union.
