USDA Considers Easing Ban on Mexican Avocados: The U.S. ban on Mexico’s avocados, imposed in 1914 over concerns about pests native to Mexico, has long been a source of friction between the two countries. The U.S. Department of Agriculture proposes lifting the ban from November through February, California’s off-market period, but Mexico’s peak. Only high-grade export-quality avocados grown in approved orchards in Michoacan could be imported, and then only into 19 states where cold weather would kill any pests.
