World IN BRIEF : SRI LANKA : Latest Fighting Kills Scores of Civilians

The fiercest fighting in eight years raged in northern Sri Lanka. The International Committee of the Red Cross said the fighting had killed 120 civilians, including 13 babies who died when the government bombed a church. Some 10,000 government troops beat back an attack by the Tamil rebels, then resumed their offensive on the Jaffna peninsula. The government campaign began Sunday and has claimed 14 soldiers and at least 11 rebels killed, according to a government spokesman.
