Update : HUNTINGTON BEACH : Lucky: A Food Fight in Name Only

Share

Celina Lee said she will refuse an offer by supermarket chain Lucky Stores Inc. to pay for the costs of changing the name of her business, Lucky Wok Gourmet Chinese Restaurant.

Lee opened the restaurant last August in the Lucky Center at Bolsa Chica Road and Heil Avenue--next door to a Lucky store. The supermarket giant demanded that she change the restaurant’s name because it included the word lucky, the trademark name of the grocer.

Lee said that more than 1,000 customers have signed a petition saying they support her right to keep the Lucky Wok name. She sent the petition, which included the name of Orange County Supervisor Jim Silva, a customer, to Lucky Stores.

The response, Lee said, was a letter from supermarket company offering to pick up the tab for her to change her restaurant’s signs and menus to show a new name.

“I’m going to refuse because there’s no reason I should change my name,” Lee said. “If I change my name, I will lose customers. Everyone will be disappointed.”
