THE SUNDAY PROFILE : Another Medalist From O.C.

In addition to swimmer Jenny Skinner of Huntington Beach, another Orange County athlete brought back a medal from this month’s Special Olympics World Summer Games in Connecticut.

Manuel Ramirez, 31, of Irvine, was a member of the California men’s volleyball team, which won a bronze medal in competition.

In all, 68 athletes traveled to the Games from California. According to Games officials, this year’s Games were attended by about 7,000 athletes, 2,000 coaches, 15,000 members of athletes’ families, 45,000 volunteers, 500,000 spectators and 1,500 media representatives from 140 nations.

Competition was held in aquatics, badminton, basketball, bocce, bowling, cycling, equestrian, soccer, golf, gymnastics, power lifting, roller skating, sailing, softball, table tennis, team handball, tennis and volleyball.
