A 16-year-old Huntington Beach boy was in stable condition after being shot in the head by suspected gang members as he stood on a street corner early Sunday.

According to police, who would not identify the victim because of his age, the teen-ager was standing near a vending truck at Oak Lane and Cypress Street about 7:30 a.m. when a car drove up and one of its three occupants asked him if he was affiliated with a gang.

When the youth didn’t answer, someone inside the car fired several shots, one of which hit the youth in the head, said Lt. Luis Ochoa of the Huntington Beach Police Department.

The victim was able to run to a nearby house, where he collapsed before being taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach.

Ochoa identified the three suspects as male Latinos, one with a shaved head.

After the shooting, they fled in a cream-colored Toyota Corolla with its back window broken out and covered with plastic, Ochoa said.
