Former La Mirada Mayor Honored

Former La Mirada Mayor Louis Piltz has received Cal State Fullerton’s Continuing Learning Experience Award as the oldest member of the university’s class of 1995.

University officials also recognized Piltz for his commitment to community work and his belief in lifelong learning.

At the age of 73, Piltz earned a bachelor of science degree in human services so that he could be more effective in his volunteer work with a battered women’s shelter, the Alzheimer’s Assn. and other charities.

“I see a lot of needs,” Piltz said, “and I figured I needed a better education. It gives me a better understanding of how to help people in crisis.”

Piltz, who was a member of La Mirada’s City Council from 1978 to 1994 and served three terms as mayor, graduated from high school in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1940. He holds an associate of arts degree from Cerritos College.

Resident Graduates From Naval Academy

James H. Martindale, a Newport Beach resident and 1990 graduate of Newport Harbor High School, has graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy.

Martindale, who played water polo for all of his four years at Newport Harbor, also played for four years for the Academy. During his tenure, the Navy team won three championships and played in four consecutive NCAA water polo champion tournaments.

Martindale has attained the rank of ensign and is working this summer as an assistant coach to the Navy water polo team. He plans to attend a specialized postgraduate business school in Athens, Ga.

Students Get $24,000 in Scholarship Awards

Coastline Community College recently recognized 109 students who received scholarship awards totaling more than $24,000.

Donors to the college scholarship funds included individuals, businesses, professional organizations and community groups.

Lectures Offered for Senior Citizens

Free lectures on senior citizen issues are being offered this summer at Cal State Fullerton.

C. Jesse Jones, co-director of the Lifespan Wellness Clinic on campus, will discuss “Pleasurable Predictors of Successful Aging” at 1:15 p.m. today.

Mary Furlong, president and founder of SeniorNet, will speak at 10 a.m. Aug. 1 about how senior citizens are using computers. That same day, a fraud expert will lecture at 1:15 p.m. on schemes and scams that target the elderly.

All of the lectures will be at Mackey Auditorium in the Ruby Gerontology Center on campus.
