Top-Seeded Players Move On
The top-seeded players posted victories Wednesday in the third round of the United States Tennis Assn. Men’s 50 and 55 Hardcourt Championships at Lindborg Racquet Club.
Len Saputo of Walnut Creek, the No. 1-seeded player in the 55 division, defeated Jack Allen of La Jolla, 6-1, 6-4. Second-seeded Gil Howard of San Francisco beat Woodson Morris of Chula Vista, 6-1, 6-0. Defending champion Larry Dodge of Piedmont, Calif., who is seeded third, also won in straight sets, defeating Norm Merrill of Rancho Palos Verdes, 6-1, 6-0.
In the 50 division singles, top-seeded Charlie Hoeveler of Ross, Calif., defeated Wes Simmons of Huntington Beach, 6-0, 6-1, and second-seeded Leland Housman of San Diego beat Dennis Trout of Solvang, 6-2, 6-4.
Today’s matches begin at 10 a.m., with the men’s 55 singles. Play begins at 11:30 a.m. in the men’s 50 singles.
