SIMI VALLEY : 1 Finalist for Chief No Longer Interested

Two top candidates remain after a third finalist withdrew from consideration as Simi Valley’s new chief of police.

City Manager Mike Sedell confirmed Thursday that Rick TerBorch, police chief in Arroyo Grande near San Luis Obispo, was no longer interested in the job.

TerBorch and Randy Adams, an assistant police chief in Ventura, had been considered the top contenders for the job. Another unnamed candidate who serves as police chief in Northern California is also considered a strong candidate, Sedell said.

The candidates are vying for the vacancy left by former Chief Willard Schlieter, who quit in March after only a year on the job.

An executive search company found about 50 interested candidates for the position, eight of whom were picked for interviews with Sedell and City Council members in June.

TerBorch and Adams were the only ones chosen for background checks. Sedell said that TerBorch’s withdrawal did not mean that Adams was the only candidate.

“I expect I will get a report back from the Sheriff’s Administration on the background checks. And after an overview of the candidates I may announce a new chief or we may want to look further for candidates,” Sedell said.

A decision on the position, which pays $79,000 to $100,000, could come by the end of the month, Sedell said.
