STANTON : Search On for Mentally Ill Man, 41

Authorities are searching for a 41-year-old man who suffers from multiple mental illnesses and functions at the level of a 10-year-old.

Officials at the Orangewood Villa Board and Care in Stanton discovered Michael Berg missing Tuesday afternoon after he became upset, said Detective Dan Stack of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Berg, whose family lives in Yorba Linda, apparently walked away about 3 p.m. Stack said the missing man relies on medication to control delusions and spasms.

“He’s the kind of guy who’s hard to control,” Stack said. “When he’s calm, he appears pretty normal. But any little thing that upsets him can send him off and running.”

Berg has trouble with simple tasks such as using the phone, counting his bus fare and recalling his address, authorities said.

“There’s no way he can find his way home on his own,” Stack added. “And without his medication, he tends to get angry and more aggressive more easily.”

An anonymous caller reported seeing Berg in the Los Angeles area with $14 in his wallet.

“I’m just hoping someone will spot him,” Stack said. “He’s not going to die, but he’s going to get more delusional without his medication.”

Berg is white, 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs about 180 pounds. He has brown hair, brown eyes and wears glasses. He was last seen wearing maroon shorts and a white T-shirt.
