Senate Approves $11-Billion Military Construction Bill

WASHINGTON — The Senate passed an $11.2-billion military construction measure Friday that boosts President Clinton’s request by $500 million for a whopping $2.5 billion increase over current spending.
The bill, approved 84-10, now goes to a House-Senate conference committee, which will resolve differences between it and a similar measure passed by the House.
The rising costs of closing military bases, combined with an urgent need for new or refurbished military housing, fueled the increase, lawmakers said.
