WESTCHESTER : Loyola Marymount Funds New Buildings

Share

A multimillion-dollar fund-raising campaign launched last fall at Loyola Marymount University will allow the Catholic institution to open a high-tech business center in August, followed next year by a modern dormitory and a newly renovated and expanded student center.

The university has raised about $75 million since November in the largest fund-raising campaign undertaken in its 130 years. By 1997, the university hopes to raise a total of $128 million to update its academic programs and facilities.

About $21 million has been used so far for a new building to house the College of Business Administration. The Conrad N. Hilton Center for Business, named after the hotelier who donated $4 million to the project in 1992, will include a 350-seat lecture hall equipped for worldwide video conferencing, classrooms outfitted with outlets for laptop computers, and a simultaneous translation room for international conferences. The four-story, 88,000-square-foot building is scheduled to open in August.

Construction began in June on a $7-million, 249-bed dorm to be built on the Leavey Campus, a 27.5-acre parcel of formerly vacant land next to the main university campus in Westchester. It will open in fall of 1996. Construction on a 900-car parking structure was completed on the Leavey Campus this spring.

An additional $8 million will be used to expand the Lorenzo M. Malone Memorial Student Center, which houses the student cafeteria, the college bookstore, the campus ministry and other services.

The renovation, which will add 19,000 square feet to the building, will enlarge the dining room, the bookstore and the student affairs office. A new student lounge, faculty dining room and president’s dining room are also planned.

The building’s entire exterior will be refurbished to match the adjacent St. Robert’s Hall. Construction is scheduled to begin in July and end in December, 1996.
