SIMI VALLEY : Comcast Asks City for a Rate Increase

Share

The Simi Valley City Council is scheduled Monday night to hear a request by Comcast Cable Television to increase charges for installing services and renting cable equipment.

The company is seeking an 18-cent boost in the monthly cost for using a remote control. Installation charges would rise 11 cents from $37.86 to $37.97.

Since federal law gave city officials the power to regulate local cable rates, Simi Valley officials have tried to roll back rates for the roughly 28,000 cable customers in the city.

The company and the city clashed early this year when Comcast applied to increase monthly rates and city officials countered that basic cable rates should be rolled back 21 cents. The case was referred to the Federal Communications Commission in March and is still pending.

“That issue could take another four to 10 months to resolve,” said Joe Hreha, Simi Valley’s director of environmental services, who oversees the cable franchise for the city.

Basic monthly rates will remain at about $21.90 pending the resolution of the case.
