OXNARD : Parks Offer Programs for Campers Ages 7-12
Campers ages 7 to 12 are invited to join the Junior Rangers Program at McGrath State Beach and Point Mugu State Park this summer.
The program is designed to teach children about the natural and cultural heritage of the state’s parks in hourlong classes in subjects such as geology, ecology, history, plants and wildlife.
“It is different every day,” park aide Suzanne Kilburn said. “It gives them something to do and makes them learn more about what we have out here.”
McGrath State Beach offers sessions twice a day, including popular classes on sand dunes and the Chumash tribe.
Awards such as pins, certificates and patches are given to children as they progress through the program.
Sessions are being offered at 70 parks across the state. Participants can start the program at one park and continue at another site.
Junior Rangers is sponsored by the California Department of Parks and Recreation and is free to visitors who have already paid park entrance or camping fees.
