Nation IN BRIEF : GEORGIA : Slayer of King’s Mother Is Resentenced
The man who gunned down Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s mother in a church 21 years ago has been taken off Death Row and resentenced to life without parole, a prosecutor said. Marcus Wayne Chenault, 44, received the new sentence under a deal reached with prosecutors, Fulton County Dist. Atty. Lewis Slaton said. Slaton said he struck the agreement because of doubts about Chenault’s mental competency. King family members have said they were satisfied with the new sentence, Slaton said. On June 30, 1974, Chenault opened fire at a service in Ebenezer Baptist Church, killing 70-year-old Alberta King, who was playing “The Lord’s Prayer” on the organ.
