Valleywide : 118 Freeway Markers Are Signs of Change

Share

Simi Valley Freeway no longer exists.

The 26-mile thoroughfare between the San Fernando Valley and Moorpark has been renamed the Ronald Reagan Freeway, and signs bearing the new name appeared along its route for the first time this week.

Legislators authorized the name change in honor of the 40th President last year. They cited years of public service by Reagan, 84, and his recent decision to disclose that he is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

State Sen. Cathie Wright (R-Simi Valley) co-authored the Senate version of the resolution and noted the freeway leads to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library near Simi Valley.

“I think it’s only appropriate that with the Reagan library in the area, right at the end of the 118 freeway, it would be named for Ronald Reagan,” Wright said shortly before the Senate approved the name change with a 38-0 vote in December.

The project included installation of six signs and replacement of four other placards that give directions to the Reagan library. The $26,600 cost of the changes was paid by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation.

California Department of Transportation crews installed the signs Monday.

The new placards are located along the westbound side of the freeway near Dronfield Avenue, Rocky Peak Fire Road and Woodley Avenue, and along the eastbound side near College View Avenue, Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Rocky Peak Fire Road.
