‘Betty Boop’ Clips to Screen at Benefit

“Betty Boop Confidential,” a new compilation of clips from cartoons of the beloved Boop-Boop-a-Doop Girl, will screen Aug. 7 at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, 8949 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills.

The clips, to be released by Kit Parker Films, will benefit the animation preservation projects of the International Animated Film Society. Proceeds will be donated to the UCLA Film and Television Archive.

The “Boop-mobile,” a vintage red Cadillac convertible bearing a glamorous “Betty Boop” and “Escorts,” will open festivities at 7:30 p.m. Film historian and “Entertainment Tonight” critic Leonard Maltin will be host of the evening. The screening will be preceded by a short dealing with animation preservation and by remarks from director Richard Fleischer, whose father, Max Fleischer, first brought Betty out of the inkwell in the summer of 1930.

Besides honoring the 65th year since Betty Boop’s debut, the event launches ASIFA’s Adopt-a-Cartoon program, which invites individuals or groups to help underwrite the preservation of endangered pre-1950 nitrate cartoons. This campaign is being launched with the support of King Features, licensing agents for Betty Boop. Tickets are $10 each. Information: (818) 842-8330.
