Oral F. Maxwell, an avid fisherman and longtime Port Hueneme resident, has died. He was 85.
Born in Nocona, Tex., Maxwell died at his home in Port Hueneme after a sudden illness, said Joyce Maxwell, his wife of 59 years.
Oral Maxwell moved to Port Hueneme during World War II to work for the Seabee base as a mechanic. After retiring in 1961, Maxwell dedicated his time to his family, his wife said.
An avid fisherman, Maxwell fished nearly every morning at the Port Hueneme pier and spent his afternoons working on his vegetable garden behind his house, Joyce Maxwell said.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Oral F. Maxwell Jr., of Hollister, Calif., a daughter, Shannon Lance of Port Hueneme, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the James A. Reardon Mortuary in Oxnard.
