Plan to Merge Data Agencies Shelved: The Clinton Administration has dropped indefinitely its plan to combine the agencies that churn out vital economic statistics, accusing Republican lawmakers of “partisan posturing” on the issue. Commerce Undersecretary Everett Ehrlich said the Administration will instead work to improve coordination and cooperation under the existing statistical system, which is made up of more than 70 far-flung agencies. In March, the Administration said it was conducting a review of about 10 big agencies to see whether merging them would improve the overall system.
