Stanton Boy, 12, Shot at Restaurant

A 12-year-old Stanton youth was shot in the leg while ordering at a fast-food restaurant after two men in a car asked whether he belonged to a street gang, an Orange County sheriff’s spokesman said Sunday.

The youth, who was hit in the upper right leg, was taken to Western Medical Center-Anaheim. Authorities declined to identify the victim because of his age, Sheriff’s Lt. Jay Mendez said.

The youth and an older friend rode up on their bicycles about 11:29 p.m. Saturday and ordered food at the Jack-in-the-Box restaurant at 8050 Chapman Ave., Mendez said.

Before the shooting, one of the suspects yelled from the car, “Who do you claim?” Mendez said, a reference to a gang affiliation. Both the victim and his friend wore gang attire, Mendez said.

“After they yelled that,” Mendez said, “then they started firing at them.”

The youth’s friend was not hurt.

No immediate description of the suspects was available.
