Rescue teams from the U.S. Coast Guard were searching the waters off California near its border with Mexico on Sunday for four Americans and their Mexican tour guide, missing since Friday.

The Americans were identified as two men from Hemet, one of their brothers and a fourth passenger identified only as “Rick.” They left on a chartered fishing trip Friday morning with the tour guide.

“The group was seen near San Martin Island, seven miles from San Quintin at 9 a.m. Friday,” said Jan Williams, operator of the Baja Outfitter in San Diego. “They radioed at noon Friday that they were heading out to sea on a 170 to 200 degree heading to fish for tuna, and we have not seen them since.”

According to Lt. Roger King of the U.S. Coast Guard in San Diego, search flights seeking to spot the 24-foot vessel began late Saturday afternoon. Mexican search vessels were expected to join the search, he said.
