Police investigators are seeking murder charges against Bill Charles Poynor, who they say is the main suspect in the April killing of an ATM technician.

Poynor, 50, was arrested by police last Tuesday at the Rustic Inn in Anaheim in connection with a federal parole violation, said Orange Police Sgt. Dave Jensen.

Investigators said similarities between Poynor’s physical description and those of the man who killed Robert T. Walsh, 58, led them to link Poynor to the murder case, Jensen said. Witnesses this week identified Poynor, confirming him as their lead suspect, Jensen added.

The body of Walsh, who worked for Wells Fargo Armored Service Corp. as an ATM serviceman, was found on Easter Sunday, April 16, in a torched car in an Orange shopping center.

Walsh had died of a gunshot wound to the head. Police believe as much as $13,000 collected on Walsh’s rounds was stolen in the killing.

Poynor, a paroled bank robber, is a suspect in 20 robberies in Arizona, Jensen said. Authorities also believe Poynor is responsible for a number of armed robberies in both Orange and San Diego counties.

Jensen said Poynor also goes by the aliases Bill Silver and Irving Silver. Poynor was carrying a handgun at the time of his arrest, but officials do not believe it was the weapon used to kill Walsh, Jensen said.

Authorities said Poynor has relatives in Illinois, but his hometown is unknown.

Anyone with information in reference to Poynor is asked to contact Orange Police Detective Matt Miller at (714) 744-7556.
