Santa Ana’s Cambra Wins Second World Title in Bicycle Motocross

Larry Cambra, 14, of Santa Ana won his second consecutive world championship international BMX bicycle race over the weekend in Melgar, Colombia, said his mother, Jan Cambra.

Cambra, a sophomore at Foothill High, won the 14 Expert title Sunday competing against more than 50 riders from around the world. He won the 13 Expert title a year ago in Michigan.

Cambra also won 14-15 Cruiser class, Jan Cambra said.

Sam Olson has been named general manager of The Balboa Bay Racquet Club in Newport Beach, Balboa Bay Club president Henry E. Schielein announced.

Olson has operated a junior tennis academy at the club for the past six years. Glenda Winterbotham, who has been interim manager since February, was named assistant manager.

Long Beach State assistant baseball coach Steve Rousey has been named baseball coach at Los Angeles City College. Rousey, 34, has directed the Long Beach pitching staff the past three seasons. He was a three-year starter as a pitcher for Cal State Fullerton, helping the Titans to a College World Series appearance in 1982.

Eight Connie Mack baseball teams, including two from Orange County, will compete in the first National Invitational Classic round-robin tournament.

The event, sponsored by the Independent Amateur Baseball Assn., runs Wednesday through Sunday, with games at Cal State Fullerton, Orange Coast College and Long Beach State.

Along with the O.C. Cardinals and O.C. Cowboys, teams from Long Beach, Washington, Louisiana, Georgia and Texas make up the field. Each team plays every team at least once. The top four teams meet Sunday afternoon in the semifinals, and the winners play for the championship Sunday night at Blair Field in Long Beach.

During the week, doubleheaders will be played at Long Beach State and OCC at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and CSF at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children younger than 12.

Recent Times all-county players in the tournament include La Quinta’s Craig Jones and Craig Kuzmic; Mater Dei’s Mike Hessman and Fountain Valley’s Greg Hanoian.
