Latino Media Group Opposes Merger: The National Hispanic Media Coalition plans to oppose Walt Disney Co.’s acquisition of Capital Cities/ABC Inc. Officials with the group said that KCAL-TV Channel 9, which is owned by Disney, has failed for seven years to meet the Federal Communications Commission’s minimum standards for hiring Latinos. “KCAL is the only station in Los Angeles which is still not in compliance with FCC hiring regulations,” said Alex Nogales, coalition chairman. The organization is also unhappy with the ABC network, which it claims has discriminated against hiring Latinos in its prime-time programming. Spokesmen said the group will file its opposition to the merger with the FCC. Disney could not be reached for comment.
