Delta to Trim 60 Flights From Dallas Airport : Airlines: Carrier had hinted more cuts were needed to maintain newfound profitability.

Delta Air Lines said Thursday that it is cutting 60 daily flights from Dallas-Ft. Worth in a further move to eliminate unprofitable routes.

The latest realignment of Delta’s domestic flight system comes just days after the airline, which was losing money for most of this decade, announced a record profit for the April-June quarter. The airline hinted then that further cost cutting would be necessary to continue profitability.

Delta’s hubs in Atlanta and Cincinnati will gain some flights in the realignment. A few international routes are being eliminated.

Delta similarly shook up its domestic route system in February as part of an extensive cost-cutting program, begun last year, that also has included the elimination of 15,000 jobs.

No one will be laid off as a result of the moves announced Thursday, said Delta spokesman Todd Clay, though an undetermined number of airport customer service jobs will be eliminated in Dallas. Those people will be offered jobs elsewhere in the firm, he said. Delta employs 5,500 people in Dallas.

“When we launched the [cost-cutting] program, we said we would review our flight schedules to ensure maximum use of resources and improved revenues,” said Robert W. Coggin, Delta senior vice president.

The most dramatic changes in the new realignment are in Dallas-Ft. Worth. When the changes become effective Dec. 1, Delta will offer 135 daily flights from the airport, compared to 195 now.

In Atlanta, where Delta is based, 552 daily flights will be offered, compared to 544 now.

While Delta is expanding its service overall from Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport, it is discontinuing several short-haul routes.
