Countywide : Federal Food Program to Expand in County

Share

A federal program that feeds needy mothers and children will expand by 35% in Orange County, the county’s Health Care Agency announced Thursday.

Funds from the federal Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Food Program have been awarded to three Orange County organizations, which will bring the number of people served here to 65,000, the health agency said.

As part of a six-year expansion of the program in Orange County, WIC services now will be offered by Camino Health Centers in San Juan Capistrano, Planned Parenthood offices in Costa Mesa, Garden Grove and Santa Ana, and Public Health Foundation Enterprises, which will open two clinics in North County.

The program offers nutritional advice and food to women who meet the government’s income criteria, have a doctor’s referral and demonstrate some nutritional problem.

“Every dollar we spend on WIC, taxpayers save over $3 in Medi-Cal cost,” said Dr. Hugh Stallworth. “But more importantly, the county’s most vulnerable infants and children get the nutrition they need to help them grow healthy and strong minds.”
