Campuswide Board Meetings Will End

Saying that student turnout does not justify the cost of moving meetings, Ventura County College District trustees have voted to stop holding a yearly board meeting at each campus.

They would rather make informal visits to the Oxnard, Moorpark and Ventura college campuses during the day than make appearances for the night meetings, they said.

But some faculty members and students protested ending the road show.

“It’s important that the five board members once a year come to the campuses to remind you of faces behind the enrollment statistics,” academic Senate representative Deborah Ventura told the board.

But Trustee Norman Nagel, who proposed keeping all meetings at the district office, said students do not make an effort to show up at board meetings held on their campuses unless they have a specific issue to address.

“I look out there meeting after meeting after meeting and see the same faces, no matter where the meetings are held,” Nagel said. “I’d like to be invited to a board day on each campus.”

The district will save about $1,875 by stopping the practice of holding its spring board meetings at the different college campuses.
