Seles Returning to Women’s Tour Next Week in the Canadian Open

Monica Seles will make her return to the professional tennis tour next week at the du Maurier Ltd. Canadian Open in Toronto.

Seles has accepted a wild card into the tournament, which already has four other top 10 players, including Steffi Graf, ranked co-No. 1 with Seles, No. 2 Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, No. 5 Mary Pierce and No. 8 Gabriela Sabatini. Another wild card has been given to 15-year-old Venus Williams.

Seles had hoped to end her two-year hiatus from the tour two weeks ago, but nagging tendinitis in her left knee delayed her plans. She has already entered the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 28 in New York.

Seles had been expected to play in this week’s Acura Classic at Manhattan Beach, but her practice schedule at her home in Sarasota, Fla., was interrupted by Hurricane Erin, which caused her to leave the state to work out.

Seles has not played in a tournament since being stabbed in the back on April 30, 1993, during a match at Hamburg, Germany.
