SIMI VALLEY : Plan to Renovate Building Rejected

Share

A plan to turn a former furniture store into a building supply center was rejected by the Simi Valley Planning Commission on Wednesday.

Commissioners voted 4-1 to reject the project, which called for the renovation of the old Reed’s Furniture building on the corner of Los Angeles Avenue and Crater Street.

Reed’s closed after the Northridge earthquake in January, 1994. Since then, the building has fallen into disrepair and has occasionally housed transients, commission Chairman Dean Kunicki said.

The project’s developer, Michael K. Harn, wanted to fix up the building and create an outdoor supply yard behind it.

The denial came after neighbors turned out to complain about the traffic, noise and dust the store would have generated.

“I think the applicant has done everything he can,” Commissioner Michael Piper said, “but I don’t think there’s any way to make this compatible with residential” neighborhoods.
