Tropical Storm Felix gained strength Wednesday as it churned through the eastern Atlantic Ocean but remained at least two days from land, forecasters said.

At 2 p.m. PDT, Felix was about 1,100 miles east of the Leeward Islands of the eastern Caribbean and was moving west at near 20 m.p.h., the National Hurricane Center said.

Maximum sustained winds were nearly 50 m.p.h. and extended 115 miles from its center.
