The 35th Annual Watermelon Festival--where more than six tons of the red, juicy melon will be given away--is scheduled to begin today at Sunland Park.
Carnival rides, games, food and drawings will be featured in addition to the crowning of the Watermelon Queen and her court, scheduled for 8 tonight.
The event is the major annual fund-raiser for the Sunland-Tujunga Lions Club, which supports projects for local youth, senior citizens, the blind and the hearing-impaired.
Hours of the festival are noon to 10 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday, with free watermelon handed out Saturday and Sunday afternoon and evenings. Sunland Park is located at 8651 Foothill Blvd.
Admission is free. For more information, call (818) 353-1670.
