Entertainment Complex at Santa Anita Track Opposed

More than 500 people packed a hearing in Arcadia on Wednesday--several voicing opposition to a proposed $100-million, Universal CityWalk-style entertainment complex at the Santa Anita racetrack.
Residents expressed fears that the 123-acre complex would bring more noise, traffic and crime to the city.
“We don’t need a Disneyland in Arcadia,” said resident Janet Mueller.
By 1997, Santa Anita Cos., which owns the racetrack, wants to open a 25-screen, 5,000-seat theater complex, an ice rink, restaurants, retail stores and a sports museum in Santa Anita’s south parking lot. Company officials say the family-oriented project would create more than 2,000 jobs and generate $2.3 million in annual tax revenue to the city.
The City Council is scheduled to vote on the project in December or January.
