Sylmar : Volunteers Sought for School Cleanup

Share

Officials at Hubbard Street Elementary School are seeking community volunteers to help clean their Sylmar campus of weeds and trash on Aug. 25 and 26.

Organizers say the two-day effort is necessary to make the campus presentable by Sept. 7, its first day of instruction for the 1995-96 school year.

Cleanup activities will run from 8 a.m. to noon on both days.

Principal Nancy Oda, who planned the event, said the Northridge earthquake created cracks in the school’s play area and strong rains have fueled the growth of weeds.

“It is horrible--the place looks like we aren’t welcoming children,” Oda said. “I would not want my own kid to see it like this.”

About 960 students are enrolled at the school.

Several classrooms previously received a face lift through earthquake recovery funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Oda hopes to eventually repave the campus play area but is unsure of when state funding will become available.

The school is located at 13325 Hubbard St. More information is available by calling (818) 367-1944.
