Calabasas : Eatery’s Revised Plans Will Be Considered

Revised plans for a Burger King restaurant will be considered Aug. 24 by the Calabasas Planning Commission, which opposed an earlier proposal that called for a controversial freeway sign.

The hearing is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 26135 Mureau Road.

Applicant Frank Niesner offered to revise his plans after the commission expressed disapproval at a previous hearing. Instead of a 30-foot pole sign, the developer has offered to install an 64-square-foot illuminated wall sign mounted on a 26-foot tower.

The freeway signs are a sticky issue for Calabasas, which has outlawed installation of new freeway signs in its recently approved general plan. At the same time, city officials said they don’t want to be perceived as anti-business and conceded that local businesses need some way to attract customers from the freeway.

Meanwhile, the city is reviewing an application from Niesner’s partner, Bill Haug of Simi Valley, for an Express Lube auto service center at the same location, on Las Virgenes Road near the Ventura Freeway.

But a neighboring business, Taco Bell, and the Sheriff’s Department said the two new businesses at the site would create a parking problem, city officials said.
