AIRPORT NOISE: Take your seats and fasten your seat belts--there is turbulence at Santa Monica Airport.

The Los Angeles Unified School District has joined the ongoing debate about noise and pollution created by the airport, and the likelihood of accidents.

The school board voted unanimously this week to request that the Federal Aviation Administration study the effect the airport has on schools and students in nearby Los Angeles communities. Board members also created a permanent Santa Monica Airport safety committee.

School officials’ concerns are rooted in a proposal by the airport to install a new directional beacon that would guide planes onto the runway. The beacon would direct planes along a new flight path over West Los Angeles and near two Los Angeles schools.

If the FAA approves the new signal, it will be in place as early as 1997.
