MISSION VIEJO : Council OKs Funding for Memorial
A campaign to build a war memorial was jump-started this week when the City Council agreed to back the project.
At a special meeting Thursday, council members unanimously approved a $24,000 contract with Redhawk Builders to construct a memorial statue outside the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center.
The city is putting $45,000 into the project, which will commemorate World War II veterans with a bronze statue. Later, similar monuments will be built to honor veterans of World War I as well as the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.
The first phase is to be completed in time for Veterans Day on Nov. 11.
Veterans groups in Mission Viejo will be working to raise money to pay for future memorials, upkeep on the statues and to reimburse the city for its financial support.
“Many of us are children of veterans, and I think you’ll find [the community] feels very strongly” about the project, said Councilwoman Sherri Butterfield. “I’m delighted that the first public sculpture in Mission Viejo will be of veterans.”
The council also agreed to pay for an insert promoting the war memorial fund-raiser in the quarterly city newsletter that will be mailed the first week of September.
